Announcing a call for scores of solo piano music
April 9, 2014
JAI JEFFRYES is a New York based classical pianist seeking new solo music for performance and recording. The purpose of the call for scores is to introduce audiences to music they have not yet heard. Submissions must be not yet commercially released on recording. It is acceptable if the music has been disseminated on the internet via YouTube, Soundcloud, personal websites, etc., as long as a commercial recording has not yet been produced. Submissions need not be works for premiere.
Submissions must be solo piano works. The length should be three to twelve minutes. The style is open to the taste of the composer. Non-traditional methods of tone production are not excluded, but keep in mind that the intention is to program submissions along with traditional repertory, and therefore piano preparation would be an impractical alternative for this call. Improvisational elements are not excluded. However, Jai is not otherwise an improvising soloist and it is suggested to consider the effectiveness of such compositional techniques for this call.
The intention for selected submissions is to present them in live performance in programs also to include traditional repertory, and then to record them for a CD made up exclusively of submissions from this call to be released on Jai's independent label, Steel Wig Records.
The genesis of this call was relationships initiated or cultivated via Twitter. Steel Wig Records marketing emphasizes social media and permission based marketing. Jai invites the sharing of this call via Twitter and other social media. The presentation and marketing of this project will exploit the story of musicians making connections with one another and with listeners via Twitter and perhaps other social media. Though not specifically required for this call, submitters are invited to follow Jai on Twitter using his Twitter account, @PnoJai. There is no penalty for following and unfollowing Jai, and that could conceivably be an interesting, edgy story, too. Anything a submitter offers to the Twitter story can only help the project.
The call is open until July 1, 2014. There is no fee for submitting. Given a choice of format, PDF files are preferred. Hard copies are acceptable. Demo recordings are welcome via a link to Dropbox, Soundcloud, or other external hosting site. Please do not email audio files.
Most of all thank you, composers, for your music and your inspiration. May we performers live up to your vision and carry it to audiences.
